IPsec network traffic generation service

The IPsec network traffic generation service (Item # : N211-204)

The IPsec network traffic generation service is to set up the strongSwan tool to generate IPsec traffic loads to test network system components such as routers. We will then analyze the raw test results to meet the requirements of complex network management operations for both short and longer term. The StrongSwan tool is an open source software project that provides IPsec implementation and load generation with the focus on strong authentication mechanisms using X.509 public key certificates and optional storage of private keys on smartcards through a standardized PKCS#11 interface.

The service product is to provide an instrumentation and management approach to implementing essential Test and Evaluation functionalities to establish an IPsec-based virtual private network testing environment. The RTSync team will set up appropriate configuration settings of the strongSwan tool for realistic IPsec protocol-based traffic generation and demonstrate testing of Cisco routers and virtual private network systems in a controlled environment. The goal is to extend scripting functions of strong Swan to enable generation of a large number in the range of 5K to 10K) tunnels. At the end of the delivery, the team will install and configure strongSwan on a customer’s PC to generate large number of IPsec tunnels (5K at minimum). We will help the customer on site to collect and analyze the output results of the system under test.

The work will concern a Cisco 7606 VPN SPA or similar for the IPsec gateway with the following tasks;

Task 1 RTSync team will set up appropriate configuration settings of the strongSwan tool for realistic IPsec protocol-based traffic generation.
Task 2 RTSync team will demonstrate testing of Cisco routers and virtual private network systems in controlled environment using the Cisco 7606 Router box. The team will visit the customer site to help to collect and analyze the output results of the system under test with generation of 5000 or more tunnels.
Task 3 RTSync team will deliver a document describing the configuration settings and scripts to generate IPsec traffic load. The team will offer a training on site and provide a help desk support. RTSync will recommend the next phase of the project to add M&S layer on top of strongSwan for flexible scenario generation and efficient test configurations management.
